Would you know how many bones a shark has in its body? Or who was Queen of England when the Spanish Armada invaded? Or if hot air is heavier than cold air? The Guildford West Cub Scouts certainly did at the recent District Cub Quiz.

Five teams from Guildford West recently battled it out to see which team were the brains of the District.

Teams from 5th Guildford ‘Lions’, 1st Jacobs Well, St Nicholas 9th, 1st Stoughton and 1st Normandy answered questions covering countries, general knowledge, music, sport, history and science.

The quiz saw 5th Guildford ‘Lions’ placed first and 1st Jacobs Well in second place.

Credit must go to their teachers for providing online teaching during Covid restrictions, giving them the skills for life that Scouting thrives on.

Since the ending of Covid restrictions, Guildford West Scouts are receiving a high number of requests for places. All Beaver Colonies and Cub Packs are currently full and, in many cases, have long waiting lists.

In order to offer more places, adult volunteers are needed to run new sections. Leaders are currently needed to reopen the Beaver colony at 5th Guildford, based in Onslow Village and Wood Street Beavers – but all sections need more leaders.

Children whose parents volunteer will go to the top of a waiting list for an existing section or, if they are starting a new section, they will be able to join that.

Training and uniform will be provided and volunteers will need a DBS Disclosure. Anyone interested in volunteering should get in touch through the Guildford West Scouts website at https://guildfordwestscouts.org.uk/.
