Cardiff Devils broke up a 1-1 tie a little over two minutes from time then added a couple of empty netters to deliver a 4-1 defeat of the visiting Guildford Flames.
Ethan Strang scored on the first shot of the game giving the visitors a lead just 23 seconds after puck drop. A little under four minutes from period time, Cedric Lacroix ensured the teams would go to break even at a goal each.
The next 20 minute segment had even less in the way of scoring with Justin Fazio for Flames and Christian Stoever completing a strike free set, Fazio by then on 31 saves while his Devils counterpart had 15.
With overtime just over two minutes away, Devils had the dagger when Gleason Fournier bagged the winner. Lacroix’s second was into a gaping cage with 72 seconds remaining and a last minute freebie by Josh MacDonald closed out the final.
Fazio made 40 saves on 42 shots while Stoever made 25 of 26.
“It’s a bit of a let down to get within about two minutes of a road point so we certainly leave the building disappointed,” admitted coach Paul Dixon, “but we will have to quickly get past that and look ahead to Manchester on Sunday.”
