Cardiff Devils jumped on Flames with three unanswered first period goals and never looked back on their way to a 7-1 home ice win over the visiting Spectrum side Last night (November 28).
Cole Sanford scored back to back to get it started at 11:12 and 14:54 before Kristoff Kontos added another just 10 seconds from close of the frame.
Gleason Fournier extended the lead in the 26th minute and former Flames captain Brett Ferguson made it a 5-0 count when he netted before the end of the middle set.
On their 4th powerplay a little over seven minutes from time, Jake Coughler got Flames on the board, but less than a minute later Sanford’s hat trick goal cancelled that one out before Josh MacDonald’s goal at 58:50 completed the final count.
Jake Kupsky made 51 saves on 58 shots against Devils’ Ben Bowns who turned away 28 of 29.
“You can’t have a start like that and expect to win,” said manager Paul Dixon. They are much too good of a team to try and work your way back when you finish the first period three goals down.”
“We offered them far too much space over the evening and at points where we got in their end it was usually one shot and back out again without any sustained pressure. On Sunday we have to start better and maintain better throughout the contest and I expect that everyone here knows that and they will.”
