Guildford is going to be treated to a whole week of activities devoted to green issues, in the Great Big Green Week starting on Saturday, September 18, and finishing with a flourish with a car-free day in the town the following Sunday.
One of he organisers, Olivia Carpenter-Lomax, trustee to the charity Zero Carbon Guildford, told The Dragon of some of the exciting events planned.
These range from the car-free day, organised by Guildford Borough Council, a party in the cathedral grounds, talks on an alternative financial approach called “Doughnut Economics” to a scything workshop and a film showing of David Attenborough’s Life on Our Planet.
Olivia, with a walk-on appearance by her cat during the interview, talked with enthusiasm for the “green future that should be exciting and desirable and more convenient and fairer for everyone. We just need to get there”.

When are the GBC organisers of the town “Car Free Day” going to announce which part of the town will be closed to cars on the September 26?
In keeping with “modal shift”, is it to be the whole town centre, with buses running and all car parks as usual but inaccessible? Or will it just represent the truth of practicality and be limited to a pedestrianisation of the High Street, North Street and a few connecting streets?
I hope all entertainment and stalls will, as usual, be answering a “carbon footprint” declaration to confirm the purpose of this event.
