Dragon Interview: Secretary of State for Health Visits Guildford

Secretary of State for Health with Dragon editor Martin Giles

The Dragon’s Martin Giles spoke to Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock today (November 12) during his unannounced visit to Guildford. With Conservative candidate Angela Richardson, Mr Hancock gave a short interview outside the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

His arrival obviously surprised hospital staff and he did not enter to speak to them, but he did answer questions on local health issues and Anne Milton’s Independent stance.

It’s an impressive feat to talk for over three minutes in an interview that contains zero facts or proposals, just bland platitudes about the need for people to access healthcare near where they live. Is anyone suggesting different?

How about actually proposing a solution to prevent the closure of GP practices and the wholesale exodus of GPs from the NHS due to the ridiculous reforms imposed by the Tories over the past 10 years? Heaven forfend we fund the NHS properly. Clearly, what’s needed, it seems to be believed, is more competition, more profits to corporations and less foreign staff.

It’s reassuring that our Conservative MP candidate has used the local hospital though. That obviously qualifies her to speak with authority.
