The Dragon Says: Bill and Doreen Bellerby Should Be Our Inspiration

With the sad announcement of the death of Bill Bellerby it is timely to consider why he, and equally his wife Doreen, were held in such affection and esteem by the people of Guildford.

There are some people who are obviously and overwhelmingly good. They might not be perfect, who is, but they are modest, eschew selfishness and clearly wish to do the right thing by everyone.

By all accounts, Bill and Doreen were such a couple. They gave their time and affection to their fellow men and women freely. They showed they cared, they took responsibility, they led by example.

Bill and Doreen Bellerby.

The comments of our readers show just how dearly we held them, even if we hardly knew them, because they represented the best of humankind.

Perhaps the best tribute we could pay them is to aspire, even in a small way, to live up to the example they gave.

Bill and Doreen were straight-forward people who believed in public service for the place they lived in and loved.

They were not in politics for gain or personal advancement, they were also fun and good friends despite our political differences which I’m sure is a view shared by those of us who were on Guildford Borough Council at the same time.

This is a view shared by officers who were also around then.

After Chris and I left GBC we stayed in touch and will miss his apposite letters and cards.

We were proud to know them both and remain friends with many fellow ‘politians’ of the era.
