From Val Dillon, Fairlands WI

After a gloomy period of worrying that no-one would come forward to take over the offices of treasurer and secretary and that the WI group would fold, new committee members have materialised and, with membership at a healthy 44, Fairlands WI will now be able to continue successfully into the future.

At the November meeting Jenny Page was re-elected as president and said that she is happy to take on the role for another year, after which she will have served two years as secretary and two as president. After that she feels that it will be time for someone else to take over.

At the annual meeting, a celebratory cake was shared on the 51st birthday of the group and a good turn-out at the meeting was very encouraging.

The financial statement was presented and adopted and the xommittee’s annual report mentioned some successful events such as the table-top sale.

This is the time of year when the Denman College Bursary is drawn for. Anyone who had not previously taken a course at Denman put their names forward and May Stubbs was the lucky winner. She will be able to choose a course from the brochure and report back on her experience. This is something many members have enjoyed over the years.

Dawn Murrell, a past president, has made a good recovery from major surgery and was welcomed back. She is a well-known resident of Fairlands and a linchpin of the community. Fairlands WI is a good example of community participation.

At the next meeting on December 9, Matthew Alexander will speak about Surrey Christmas Customs and Traditions, and the competition will be for a decorative wrapped parcel. At that time we shall all be in the throes of wrapping Christmas presents so sticky tape and ribbon will be in abundance.

Fairlands WI generally meets on the second Wednesday of the month at the Community Centre starting at 7.55pm. Visitors to meetings are very welcome for a nominal entry fee of £2.

For more information contact Jenny Page, president, on 01483 538426 or Angela Linington, secretary, on 01483 233967.
