From Val Dillon, Fairlands WI
A scrap book was started by the members of Fairlands WI in the 1960s. This wonderful competition winning historical resource has become worse for wear and so plans are afoot to rebind and refurbish it.
It is hoped that it can then be displayed and perhaps scanned and available on line for all to enjoy.
It shows the homes and lives of some Fairlands residents and activities on the estate such as the long closed youth club. It has often been kept in lofts and cupboards of WI committee members over the years but deserves to be on show and appreciated.
The future of Fairlands WI is still in jeopardy. At the annual meeting in November it will be decided whether it should close if no-one comes forward to become the secretary.
At the eleventh hour, new member Christine Dunstan offered to put herself forward for the role of treasurer, but the fate of the group is still in the balance.
On October 28 there will be a “Wey Out” meeting in the Community Centre. This is a coming-together of WI groups in the area where the speaker, John Humphries, will talk about the London Marathon.
Fairlands WI members will provide home-made cakes, coffee and tea.
The annual meeting will take place on November 11 and the members have voted to open the meeting with the singing of Jerusalem.
Meetings are generally held at Fairlands Community Centre on the second Wednesday of the month, starting at 8pm.
Visitors to meetings are always welcome. To learn more contact Jenny Page, president, on 01483 538426 or Chris Humphries, secretary, on 01483 825953.
