A fallen tree in New Inn Lane, Merrow completely blocking the road.

By Martin Giles

An unconfirmed report has reached The Dragon this evening of a fallen tree that has completely blocked New Inn Lane in Merrow.

The tree is believed to have fallen at about 5.45pm but fortunately it is believed that no vehicle was struck and no casualties have ben reported.

But the road was blocked to all traffic, “causing mayhem” according to the witness, a local resident who did not wish to be named.

The resident said: “The tree fell was about halfway between the New Inn Lane junction with Glendale Drive and the New Inn Lane junction with Merrow Lane.

“It fell from the north side of the road towards the south, and even smashed down a street lamp on the opposite side,  The picture is taken from the east side, looking west.  It was probably about 15 or 20m tall, and the trunk is the best part of a metre in diameter.

“I reported it to Surrey Highways and the police 101 number, and the driver of the number 6 bus I was on at the time was also in touch with his control.”

According to live live traffic on Google maps, it appears as if the blockage has already been cleared.
