Farnham has become the first Surrey community to be awarded Plastic Free Community status by Surfers Against Sewage in recognition of the town’s efforts to reduce plastic use and they have encouraged Guildford, with three times the population of Farnham, to follow suit.
Farnham and Bordon MP Greg Stafford (Con) praised the achievement and hard work of local people which included volunteers, businesses, organisations, schools and residents.
Local business The Goode Company was awarded the Gold Champion business award for its efforts to reduce plastic at events including Rowledge Fayre, where they provided reusable cups. Their director, Jenna Goode, expressed optimism, saying: “Farnham’s achievement fills me with hope and excitement for the future.”
Deputy Mayor George Murray accepted the award on behalf of the town at Farnham Town Hall. Fifteen-year-old Farnham resident Emma Coates was the guest speaker for the event. She stressed the need to address climate change, saying that 2023 was the hottest year on record.
She said: “Today’s adult generations, including all of you, will be remembered for what you have or have not done. If we all do something little, this will lead to big change!”
Plastic Free Farnham, in collaboration with Rotary Clubs of Farnham and Farnham Town Council, engaged 30 organisations, awarded 21 businesses and participated in local events to raise awareness, such as Farnham Sustainability Festival.
Isabel Robson, chairperson of Plastic Free Farnham, believes Guildford could be the next Surrey town to receive the Plastic Free award. She said: “Only a few people are needed to get the group started in Guildford so get in touch by emailing plasticfreefarnham@gmail.com or visiting our website.
“Local charity Zero Carbon Guildford, as well as Plastic Free Farnham, can support new volunteers from their experience with the Guildford Community Fridge, Library of Things, Baby Clothes Library and more.
“The Guildford Community Fridge was started with just one member of the public coming forward and in 2024 so far has already had 4,107 visits. Guildford has three times the population of Farnham so has the potential to make an even bigger impact.”
