Flames Conquer Devils for First Cup Win

Flames took an early two-goal lead and never fully gave it back at any point across the evening on the way to a 5-1 Challenge Cup win over the visiting Cardiff Devils.

The result lifts them off the bottom of the cup standings.

Brett Neumann opened the scoring at 6:35. Jack Jacome doubled the advantage in the 14th minute, but a Kristoff Kontos reply that survived video review shortly after cut Devils deficit in half ahead of the first break.

Flames opened a much wider spread early in the middle frame as they worked to put the game out of reach with Jacome’s second just after re-start and Neumann’s second before the period was seven minutes old.  Jonathan Ducharme made it a four-goal spread to start the third when he had his side’s fifth near the midway mark which was the end of evening’s score count.

“We thought last week that we deserved a bit better at Cardiff, so it was pleasing to be able to deliver a win here against them to get a couple of Cup table points,” explained trainer Paul Dixon.

“It was also good to see some forwards get some scoring started which is an area that was a bit of a struggle over the opening couple of games and obviously we will need a lot more of that over the course of a long season”

“Now we have to re-set and get ready for an important visit to Nottingham tomorrow night.”
