From Fairlands WI
Sandra Morgan was a founder member of Fairlands WI and on July 12 she was presented with an MBE, that had been announced in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
At the July meeting she came attired in the outfit she had worn to the presentation at Windsor Castle and displaying the award which had been fixed to her jacket.
She recounted the events of the day and was applauded by her fellow WI members.
Princess Anne had been primed about Sandra’s long service of more than 50 years to the community as a parish councillor, a school governor and as a magistrate, but after confirming these accomplishments she asked: “And what about the WI?” General laughter ensued.
Also at the July meeting, Fairlands member Jill Stedman bravely undertook the onerous task of demonstrating the creation of floral table decorations.
She completed four beautiful arrangements which were then included in the evening’s raffle.
Her expertise was admired and her numerous tips and suggestions were gratefully received.
Cuttings of pittosporum from her garden featured in the arrangements, augmented by wisps of astilbe, ferns, roses, alstroemeria and lisanthus.
Knowledgeable ladies in the audience were able to supply the names of the flowers and the spelling!
After a picnic in August, in a member’s garden, the next meeting on September 14 will feature a talk titled “Wisley Gardens and Beyond” by Joan Cuthbert.
The competition will be for a sun hat. It could be a fashion or fun item or your favourite gardening headgear.
Fairlands WI meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Fairlands Community Centre starting at 8pm.
