Guildford Walking for Health group is now operating a free minibus service for people in the Bellfields area for a walk on Whitmoor Common on Friday mornings.

The co-ordinator of Guildford Walking for Health, Anneliza Kidd (left), with Dave the minibus driver.

The walks start at 11am from the Jolly Farmer pub in Burdenshott Road. Walks are either 30 minutes or one hour long. They finish back at the pub.

The co-ordinator of Guildford Walking for Health, Annelize Kidd, said: ‘’We are so happy to have secured funding National Lottery Fund to use the Stoke Community Bus.

‘’Our bus driver, Dave, will be stopping to pick up passengers at the Stoughton Road GP surgery car park at 10.20am, and at the Guildford Children’s Centre car park in Hazel Avenue at 10.30am, and drive to the start of the Whitmoor Common walks. The bus will return again at 12.30pm, after optional refreshments at The Jolly’’.

Annelize adds that some people are worried about exploring the countryside on their own. Walking in a group is a safe way to discover new places and a great way to make new friends.

Walking can play a big role in making us feel healthier. It is described by health experts as “almost perfect exercise”. Walking requires no equipment or expense and is the ideal way for most people to become more active.

Stepping out can improve cardiovascular fitness, increase muscle tone, and as it is a weight-bearing exercise, it can also help improve bone density to help stave off osteoporosis. Organised walks (brisk or not) provides us with an opportunity to socialise, good social networks enhance health, and it is a distraction from everyday stresses as stress contributes to poor health.

Walking for Health has health walks nationwide, with lots of people out every week enjoying their local green spaces. The health walks are led by trained volunteer walk leaders. It is the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks.

The walks are free, can be done almost anywhere and is very safe.

Looks like the only way to beat the oncoming SCC parking charges at Whitmoor Common and elsewhere.

People should note that it will apply to all car parks at the affected SCC open spaces, not just the the obvious well-known ones.

What a pity we did not get a chance to vote against our councillors this year – a curiously good year to choose for unpopular measures.
