The treasurer of the Westborough Allotments Self Help Association (WASHA), David Bird and Wood Street Village farmer John Gunner were talking about the site where John was once a plot-holder.
During their conversation John mentioned that he had tons of cow manure to dispose of and asked if plot-holders at Aldershot Road could use some. He suggested that people who used the manure should be asked for a donation which would be given to charity.
After two deliveries so far in 2013, donations have generated £160, of which £50 was given to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and £110 donated to Crossroads Care – whose local branch need funds to run a monthly respite care cafe day in Guildford.
David Bird said: “So it’s a novel win/win situation – John gets rid of his manure mountain, allotmenteers get some cracking natural compost and very good causes have benefited as a result.”

It was great as the children of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, who have an allotment there were able to make good use of the manure. Although those transporting it from the muck heap to the allotment plot did get rather mucky!!
