Fyfers Fly As They Score 10 to Snuff Out Flames

Guildford Flames have never before conceded 10 goals in an Elite League match but they found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-2 defeat against Fife Flyers last night (October 10).

The Flyers were bottom of the standings last season but appear to have successfully rebuilt.

Guildford’s Spectrum side were in penalty trouble through the first and second periods, eventually facing 10 Fife powerplays across the evening with the home team converting six times with the extra skater, building an 8-1 lead through 40 minutes on the way to delivering a 10-2 defeat to the Guildford side.

They traded goals early with Michael Drábek putting Flyers in front less than a minute in but a relatively quick reply by Matt Alvaro levelled it. Unfortunately, four minor penalties led to a pair of Xander Lamppa strikes, one on a five on three, then another five on four, inside the period’s last 10 seconds to lead 3-1 at the break.

It got worse for Surrey’s men in the second period with five unanswered Flyers goals.  Victor Bjorkung and Joseph Pierce in quick succession early in the frame chased starting netminder Justin Fazio in favour of Brad Arvanitis.

Not long after that, however, three straight powerplay markers by Zachary Power, Pierce, and Lamppa less than two minutes apart, during a major penalty that sent Dustyn McFaul to an early shower, had Flyers in command 8-1 to close the second.

Flames got one back quickly with a Nate Kallen goal at 41:51, but Lucas Chard in the 57th minute and then a final powerplay strike by Chase Dubois, 80 seconds from time, completed the scoring.

Fazio made six saves on 12 shots while Arvanitis was 15 of 19. Jordan McLaughlin for Flyers turned away 23 of 25 shots his way.

“Tough game and not much you can say,” said coach Paul Dixon.

“Spent most of the night on the penalty kill and didn’t do much of a job at that. It is one of those nights you have to flush and move on as fast as possible because we have a new game tomorrow and we cannot let today impact that.”

“Rough nights happen and we have to pick ourselves up and move on.”

No man of the match was named for Guildford Flames.
