Events are taking place in Guildford this coming weekend (June 16 to 18) as part of The Great Get Together, a national celebration aimed at bringing communities together.

The event marks the anniversary of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, who inspired people when she said: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.”

Voluntary Action South West Surrey has joined together with local businesses and charities to organise a street party in Chapel Street on Saturday, June 17, from 10am to 4pm.

There will be activities for all ages including a scavenger hunt, fete games, face painting, The Great Guildford Cake Off – cake contest, a barbecue and music from the Park Barn-based Rhythm of Life Community Choir.

Also on Saturday there will be field games and refreshments for all on Bannisters Field, opposite Guildford Tesco, off Egerton Road. It is being hosted by Guildford Borough Council’s community wardens and is from noon to 3pm.

The Guildford branch of Amnesty International is holding an event on Saturday on the meadow at Millmead beside the River Wey from 3pm to 5pm. Those attending are asked to take their own food and more to share around.

If you know of other events that are part of The Great Get Together this coming weekend and would like them included here, send details by email to drosedragon@gmail.com
