Guildford Choral presents Magnificat, a highly anticipated autumn concert following the choir’s triumphant spring season.
It takes place at G Live on Saturday, November 7 at 7.30pm.
Expect a diverse repertoire, pairing the gripping historical drama of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture with the vibrant Latin-infused rhythms of Rutter’s Magnificat. Concluding the programme is Mendelssohn’s monumental and uplifting Hymn of Praise (Lobgesang).
Conductor Jonathan Willcocks leads the 140-strong fully auditioned choir and will be joined by the celebrated Southern Pro Musica orchestra.
Up-and-coming soloists Maryam Wocial and Aneska Diament (sopranos) alongside Francis Melville (tenor) completes the stellar lineup.
Ludwig van Beethoven compose Egmont Overture during the Napoleonic Wars for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1787 tragedy,
It serves as an explosive musical depiction of the struggle between tyranny and freedom and celebrates the triumph of liberty over oppression.
John Rutter’s joyful modern masterpiece Magnificat is a unique setting of the sacred Song of Mary offering a vibrant, uplifting musical experience.
Heavily inspired by the energetic spirit of Hispanic festivals, the composition masterfully blends dynamic Latin rhythms, syncopated beats and soaring melodies.
Rutter conducted the world première at Carnegie Hall on May 26, 1990 and since then it is regularly performed worldwide.
Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise is an immersive ocean of sound, originally composed in 1840 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Gutenberg printing press.
Inspired by the structure of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this unique 11-movement masterpiece journeys from a stately brass opening to intimate vocal duets, culminating in a glorious deluge of soaring voices.
