Guildford Crematorium has been given an ‘outstanding’ rating following an inspection in March 2026 which gave perfect scores in six out of seven categories assessed, according to Guildford Borough Council.

Guildford Crematorium was opened in 2019.
A spokesperson for the council said the inspection by the Federation of Burial and Crematorium Authorities looked at more than 145 aspects of service delivery including care for bereaved families, facilities, environmental performance and regulatory compliance. It achieved an overall score of 99.3 per cent.
Julian Higson, joint strategic director of Housing, Communities and Environment at Guildford Borough Council, said it was “particularly reassuring to see recognition of the compassionate service provided to families, alongside the high standards of our facilities and environmental performance.
“We are incredibly proud of this outstanding result. Guildford Crematorium plays a vital role in supporting residents at some of the most difficult times in their lives and this report reflects the care, dignity and professionalism our team brings to that responsibility every day.”
GBC said the inspectors were particularly impressed by the dedication of the bereavement team and the thoughtful support offered to families, including sensitive gestures for those experiencing the loss of a child.
The crematorium’s facilities were also praised for being welcoming, clean and well maintained, with modern services such as webcasting, digital systems and flexible arrangements that help meet the needs of families. The site’s peaceful grounds and memorial areas were recognised as being maintained to an excellent standard.
Environmental performance was another strength highlighted, with the Crematorium meeting all emission standards and demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability.
The next scheduled inspection will take place in three years.
The highly acclaimed crematorium was opened in 2019. It has won several awards including RIBA South East Regional RIBA Awards (2022), Civic Trust Award (2022), Wood Award (Shortlisted, 2021), SPACES Award (Highly Commended, Community Category, 2021) and Guildford Society Design Award Winner (2020).
The Guildford Society award judges had praised the new crematorium in 2020 saying: “We felt the new buildings and spaces were timeless and would continue to provide a calm and dignified experience for many years to come.”

I dislike the new Crematorium. With it being so much wider inside than the older one, if there are only a few mourners it looks empty.
Previously the mourners could gather and support one another and look at the floral tributes under cover. Now all that takes place outdoors which is not ideal in bad weather.
To me, it is cold and bare and not comforting at such a sad and difficult time. The only improvement is the new car park.
