With the Government’s net Zero Carbon by 2050 target becoming politically contentious, the lead councillor for Environment and Climate Change, George Potter (Lib Dem, Burpham) reaffirmed the Guildford Borough Council’s position as he promoted Guildford Green Day on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
Cllr Potter said: “As a council, we are committed to reaching our carbon-neutral target by 2030 and we want our residents to see how small actions can help to create a greener, more sustainable future for Guildford.
“I’m delighted that Guildford Green Day is returning this year. It’s so important that we all do what we can to learn more about Climate Change and raise awareness of environmental concerns.”
Guildford Green Day is supporting the national Big Green Week. It is hoped that the event will help raise awareness of climate change issues and environmental concerns by promoting climate change initiatives, waste & recycling, flood resilience, vegan food, and local green businesses.
During the event, Tunsgate and the High Street will be shut from 7am to 5.30 pm. All car parks will be open as normal.
Event Highlights:
There will be a variety of engaging activities and events designed to inspire and educate the community and help save money. From eco-friendly workshops and green markets to outdoor adventures and family-friendly activities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Key highlights include:
Market stalls: Discover a fantastic range of plant-based artisan market stalls selling ethically produced food, drink and other products, plus hundreds of recycled antiques and brocante items.
Eco workshops and talks: Participate in hands-on workshops that teach practical skills for sustainable living or learn about composting, renewable energy, and more from experts in the field.
Outdoor adventures: Get free tree seeds, connect with nature, and learn about the importance of preserving our environment.
Family Fun Day: Bring the whole family for a day of fun and learning. Enjoy games and interactive exhibits that teach kids about the environment in a fun and engaging way.
Bike Project Surrey: Meet the team that repair and recycle, teaching as they go. Donated bikes are saved from the dump and repaired to ride again. Plus, recycled bikes for sale and a free smoothie bike.
Lead councillor for Commercial Services, Catherine Houston added: “Events like this bring our community together to make a real difference. Each year I’m really proud of the energy and effort that goes into delivering such an informative and brilliant event.
“I look forward to welcoming our community to Guildford to learn about the things we can all do to play our part in creating a greener Guildford, but most of all, I hope that everyone that attends has fun and enjoys the free, family day out!”
