Coaching inns played a major role in Georgian Guildford. The White Hart, situated where Sainsbury’s is today, also ran the County Assembly Rooms.
This is where the upper classes of both sexes gathered for balls and other gatherings.
The White Hart was particularly known for entertaining Conservative supporters at elections, offering one of its house specialties on these occasions.
