My wife and I had a great time at the musical Waitress at the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand last week.
I was surprised to discover that the Adelphi was where Yvonne Arnaud first appeared on stage in the musical The Quaker Girl in 1911.
She was just 21 “as clever as her ways were charming”, and she soon became one of major stars of stage and screen.
Yvonne Arnaud is also one of the stars of our Leading Lights walk and hence she is the subject of my question this time.
Before she decided to become an actress, Yvonne Arnaud was already performer of international renown. What was her previous profession?
If you know the answer, please leave a reply in the box below.
And if you would like to know more, please join one of the Leading Lights walks at 7 pm on Friday, August 16, or at 2 pm on Tuesday, August 20 (booking essential for these walks – see below).
There will also be walks on other Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, such as George Abbot and several Guildford Story walks.
To make bookings or for more information on our programme contact the Guildford Tourist Information Centre or go to www.guildfordwalks.org.uk.
For those interested in the answer to Snippet No. 27 the Friary Meux brewery produced its last beer in 1969, 50 years ago this year.
Many thanks to Aubrey Leahy for telling us of his classmate who “graduated” as a cooper at the brewery by being tarred and feathered in one of his own barrels!
If you have questions or wonder what the town was like in the past, come and join one of our free guided walks.
