League report by John Diggens
The Guildford Table Tennis League saw the finals of the cups during the past week.
In the Premier competition, the Percy Lawes Cup, Godalming A expectedly completed the cup and league double beating Burymead 5-3, but were made to fight for every point in a splendid showcase final.
We saw Rory Scott with his wonderful array of serves and technical shots of every description. There was Mark Handcock with his delightful touch and attacking play together with Simon Vine, rolling back the years, and competing as well as ever.
As to the nuts and bolts of it all; in the first match Julie Lawrence was close to taking a two sets lead against local ace Adam Laws, before losing in four. This match proved crucial to the final result.
Phil Snelson nearly upset things with a superb maximum for the Shackleford club including a comfortable win over Laws.
Merrow F, Division Two Champions, completed their double taking the Lewis cup 5-0 against Godalming G.
The finals of the Veterans Cup was a closely run thing with Burymead coming out winners at 5-4 over Merrow. Phil Snelson again starred but it was left to the ‘old guys’ Andy Meads and Ramesh Bhalla to settle things in a shoot-out at evening’s end; Bhalla finally taking the honors.
In Division Three, Woking B saved themselves from relegation by beating fellow sufferers Godalming L 7-3. A mere three points separating the teams at the end. Igor Vypirallenko did the business as he has so often this season for the Woking club.
The First Division saw Challoner A clinch second spot and promotion with an 8-2 triumph over Bramley. They also took the Intermediate Cup 5-0 against the same club. So, despite their up’s and down’s during the season a pretty good ending for the Challoner club.
