Ten caravans and several motor vehicles were widely dispersed on the field this morning. They were said to have arrived last night (May 31).

Police officers at the scene could not confirm if an entrance had been broken to gain entrance but the entrance gate was broken.

Two of the travellers said that this was part of their annual visit and that they might stay one or two nights.

A spokesperson for the University of Surrey said: “Our security team became aware on Sunday, as soon as a number of unauthorised vehicles moved on to one of the training pitches that form part of the Surrey Sports Park complex.

“We are monitoring the presence of the vehicles and are liaising closely with Surrey Police. We are working through appropriate channels to ensure an early end to the unauthorised presence of these vehicles on University property.”
