You and your children can make the most of this half-term holiday (October 23 to 28) at Watts Gallery Artists’ Village at Compton and discover a world of inventiveness from giant puppets to model ships.
Inspired by our exhibition, James Henry Pullen: Inmate – Inventor – Genius, you will use an array of materials and the helpers at the gallery to create your own.
Except for Mini Cyborgs, the events are free with admission and you can just drop in without pre-booking.
You can make a fantasy ship using weird and wonderful materials, inspired by the curious ships carved by 19th-century artist James Henry Pullen. October 23 to 28, 10am to 4pm. No booking required. Free with admission, and friends of Watts Gallery free. Great fun for all ages.
Or be an amazing inventor. Cut and stick illustrations of 19th century machinery to create bizarre machines of your own invention. October 23 to 26 October 10am to 4pm. No booking required. Free with admission and friends of Watts Gallery free. Suitable for all ages
What about being a Mini Cyborg? Led by Rosie Munro Kerr, make yourself into a mini mechanical cyborg inspired by Pullen’s giant animatronic puppet.
You will be helped to use a range of interesting everyday materials to create a mechanical figure that moves and lights up. You will be exploring mechanics, making and electricity. October 23 to 28, 10.30am to 12.30pm or 2 to 4pm. Pre-booking is required for this activity and costs £9.50 per child. Friends of Watts Gallery £8.55. It is suitable for ages 8 to 12 years.
On the last day of the week, Watts Late: Imaginarium gives an all-day occasion with family events and imaginative performance all inspired by the inventiveness of Pullen as part of Museums at Night. Saturday, October 27, 10am to 8pm. Free with admission. Friends of Watts Gallery free.
