The Upper High was closed off at midday today because of a spillage of cooking oil. making the area unsafe.
Surrey County Council responded to the incident in conjunction with Guildford Borough Council and Surrey Police but road closures are being put in place as the area is unsafe and to prevent any further spread.
Town centre traffic was seriously affected.
This evening, SCC Cllr Catherine Houston (Lib Dem Guildford South East) said: “Looks like it has mostly been cleared up and most roads opened again. One patch still needs looking at but that will be done by midnight, I am told.
“SCC are making enquiries to ascertain how the spillage occurred. The intention is to recharge the costs of the clean up to those responsible.
“I would like to thank the Surrey Highways team who moved swiftly to ensure safety for vehicles and pedestrians, and with minimum disruption right in the heart of our town.”
