Removing barriers to cycling in Surrey
By SCC
Our cycle training team, in partnership with Active Surrey, has successfully utilised Active Travel England grant funding to advance the County’s “No One Left Behind” objective.
Active Surrey has already initiated a successful scheme that redirects cycles from Surrey’s Community Recycling Centres. These cycles are refurbished by inmates at Ford Open prison and then provided free of charge to members of the community who need but do not have access to a cycle. This initiative not only promotes recycling and rehabilitation but also supports those in need within our community.
With additional funding, we are now extending our efforts to 20 schools that rank highest on the “income deprivation affecting children” index. At these schools, we are dedicated to removing barriers to cycling for children facing poverty and disadvantage.
We have made cycle training free, and for those without access to a bike, we offer a Try It Out Day. During this event, children can borrow a helmet and one of the pool cycles purchased with the grant. They can then participate in Bikeability Level 2 training using the borrowed bike.
At the end of the Level 2 course, the school will coordinate with parents or guardians to offer a helmet and a free refurbished bike from Active Surrey. This ensures that children can continue to enjoy cycling beyond the training programme.
The scheme started in September 2024 and initially runs through to March 2025. We have already seen an increase in the uptake of Level 2 training, with some schools participating for the first time. So far, we have provided free refurbished bikes to 10 children, enabling them to continue cycling after completing their Bikeability Level 2 course.
