Encouraging Young People to Keep Safe

Every journey starts with a choice. Whether it’s walking to college, catching the bus, learning to drive or travelling with friends, young people make decisions every day that can affect their safety on the road.

This autumn, Surrey RoadSafe is encouraging young people aged 16 to 24 to recognise everyday risks, make safer choices and look out for their friends when travelling. Safe travel isn’t about limiting independence. It’s about making confident decisions that help everyone get home safely.

While most journeys end without incident, the consequences of risky behaviour can be devastating. Between January 2023 and December 2025, 428 young people aged 16 to 24 were killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads, accounting for around 20% of all people killed or seriously injured in the county.

Young people have told Surrey RoadSafe that they want road safety advice to be relevant, authentic and easy to relate to. Concerns highlighted included speeding, distractions, passenger pressure, drink and drug driving, and travelling at night.

As the evenings become darker over the coming months, young people are being encouraged to think carefully about the risks that can come with travelling at night, whether they’re driving, cycling, walking or travelling with friends. Parents, carers, schools, colleges and community groups can all play a role in supporting safer choices and encouraging positive conversations about road safety.
