Godstone High Street Collapse – What’s Happening Now
Most residents affected by the collapse on Godstone High Street on February 17 have now returned home, as recovery efforts continue.
Highways officers are carrying out detailed investigations into the cause of the collapse and developing a plan to restore the area.
The site remains under close examination, with geological surveys and testing underway. Boreholes are being sunk to depths of 15–20 metres below ground level to check for hidden voids, locate displaced material from the original collapse, and assess the strength and condition of the ground beneath the road. This will help determine if further stabilisation is needed before repair work can begin.
Essential utility services – including gas, water, electricity, and telecoms – are being reconnected. Temporary connections have kept residents and businesses running, but full restoration requires careful coordination between multiple utility providers to rebuild and reconnect infrastructure.
Once investigations are complete, a full repair plan will be finalised. This will include additional excavation, reconstruction of the road and pavements, and permanent utility reconnections.
The A25 remains closed in both directions through Godstone, with a clearly marked diversion via A25 Oxted Road, A22 Godstone Bypass, and Eastbourne Road. Please follow signage and avoid the area if possible.
Parking restrictions are in place on Eastbourne Road to help reduce school congestion. Some bus stops are also out of service – please check our traffic and travel webpage for updates.
