Retail giant Tesco says customers “can make a huge difference to the lives of people facing hunger and hardship ahead of Christmas”, by donating long-life items during its annual winter food collection.
It adds that in 2024 customers donated food to the collection that was given to food distribution charities Trussell and FareShare, and that both expect to see increased demand for their services this winter.
FareShare Sussex & Surrey, that has a distribution warehouse on the Midleton Enterprise Park in Guildford, says (according to Tesco’s press release) that more than a third of such charities now primarily serve families with children, or services for children. While Trussell is predicting that ts food banks will need to give out an emergency food parcel every 10 seconds this winter to meet need.
Tesco’s larger stores, such as Guildford’s, off Ashenden Road and opposte Bannisters field, is offering pre-packed customer donation bags.
Tesco says these typically cost between £2 and £4, are pre-filled with healthy and nutritious long-life items and can be picked up in store and paid for at the checkout.
Tesco’s winter food collection is running now in its stores but only until this Saturday, November 29, so hurry if you want to buy and donate.
