Well, it was in Guildford High Street on Thursday night (November 22), when the festive lights were switched to the sound of Slade’s famous hit song Merry Xmas Everybody, followed by a cascade of fireworks over the Guildhall.
Once again thousands packed into the town centre, enjoying the late-night shopping and the entertainment in the High Street. Host Peter Gordon of 96.4 Eagle Radio kept the crowd informed on proceedings, building up the excitement until the lights were switched on at 7pm by actress Susie Blake, star of Aladdin at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, and the Mayor of Guildford, Jennifer Jordan.
A firework display followed (in rather windy conditions) courtesy of the Tunsgate Shopping Centre.
After the pyrotechnics, Peter Gordon thanked the crowds for attending and reminded them what a busy year it had been in Guildford. He thanked local residents for supporting those events that had taken place this year, saying that the more people who support such events, the more will be organised.
The official switching on of the town centre’s Christmas lights was organised by Guildford Borough Council and the Guildford Town Centre Management Group.
Late-night shopping in the town centre will run every Thursday evening until December 20.
