A new community social get together is being held on Monday (April 22) in the form of a monthly tea dance with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
It is being held at Stoughton Methodist Church Hall in Stoughton Road from 10am to noon. At the events, to be held on alternate Mondays and Fridays each month, there will also be bingo, craft making and raffles.
Local neighbourhood watch stalwarts Jan Cook and Raineee Wornham are organising the tea dances with funding from Surrey County Council’s Travel SMART initiative.
It means that entry is only £1. Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be available. All money raised will be invested in running further dances into next year.
Jan Cook said: “Our aim is to welcome not only local people and their friends to our monthly tea dances, but representatives from local groups and organisations too. These will include community safety wardens, the police and PCSOs, local councillors, first aiders and so on. They will be there to offer advice, information and support.
“We hope that people who come along will also be able to make new friends and so build community relations.”
Mrs Cook added that the idea came about following conversations with the local community safety warden Andy Coumbe and Nigel Smallbone from Voluntary Action South West Surrey. A bid for some funding from Travel SMART was successful and now the scene is set for the first dance!
Looking further ahead, a Christmas special is being planned for December that will take place during an evening with tea, cakes and sandwiches and music from special guests. More to be announced nearer the time.
Just go along on Monday as there’s no need to book. But for more details contact Jan Cook on 01483 823709 or send her an email to jancook69@hotmail.com

Will this be an opportunity for two-left-footers like me to get a chance to learn the basics of ballroom?
If not I still enjoy tea.
