Walk the Wey takes place on Saturday, September 16, from Godalming and West Byfleet to Guildford, raising money for the Bishop of Guildford’s Communities Fund.
This charity helps to fund parish projects that reach out into communities to support some of the poorest and most disadvantaged in the Diocese of Guildford, which covers most of Surrey and parts of north east Hampshire.
The Bishop of Guildford, the Rt Revd Andrew Watson, will be walking with the group from West Byfleet and Paul Davies, the newly installed Bishop of Dorking will be walking with the group from Godalming.
Bishop Andrew said: ‘The fund has never been so necessary, at a time when the cost-of-living crisis is making life extremely hard for some of the poorest in our diocese, and many of our churches are reaching out to them with the love of Christ.
“It’ll be good to highlight that work, and raise some money along the way, as we walk and talk together.”
Two years ago the fund organised Walk the Way, along the North Downs Way from Farnham and Dorking to Guildford, which raised £4,300 and the diocese says it is hoped this year’s walk will exceed that figure.
There is still time to join the walk – click on this link where you will find information about the routes, timing and how to sign up.
Previously, the fund has helped launch cooking classes for young families and a scheme to retrain the long-term unemployed in the north area of Guildford, has supported a scheme which operates hearing aid clinics in 44 parishes throughout Surrey and north east Hampshire, another with provides practical and emotional support to those with particular needs in East Molesey and a youth project in West Molesey.
