Letter: Brexit – The Government’s Negotiating Position Should Not Be Undermined

Peter Gatford

The government asked the voting public to instruct them to remain in the EU or to leave. The result, as we all know, was that a majority wished to leave.

Those in power should now be given the tools to do that job, that is democracy.

Those who do not like the result are given much coverage and space to put forward their belated, arguments, including views that the voting public was too old, too simple or too misguided.

But what is different to this and any other election, local or national, we have had? We have always had winners and losers in those too and I do not remember many losers, if any, having bitter recriminations about not winning.

We could, of course, go back to the first referendum some 40 odd years ago, when we were asked whether we should remain in the “Common Market” or not. I voted to remain.

But we were lied to and misled; just look at what the Common Market turned into.

What it does show, if earlier letters are to be believed, is that MPs voting preferences, during the Referendum, were out of touch with the majority view. Many of those MPs have since taken on board that knowledge and believe their duty now is to reflect the wishes of the result from the UK as a whole, whatever political party or constituency they represent. I believe Anne Milton, like many others who believe in true democracy, is one such MP.

The decision has been made. I have great faith in our country and remain proud of its heritage and fairness.

I believe those still intent on disrupting the Brexit process and weakening the negotiating position may have to reflect on their part in attempting to disrupt democracy itself. They may hamper the government’s attempts to secure the best deal for this country’s future and regain our authority and independence, as was the wish of the majority.

Germany is now unable to form a government (unless they swallow their silly pride and go with AFD); the EU is now admitting that without our money they will not be able to continue their current projects; in every European country opposition to the insane policy of encouraging more and more immigration from Africa and Asia is bringing what the BBC and other left-wingers call the “far right” nearer to power.

I would say thank goodness we are getting out of the EU.
