Letter: Could Our Westminister Leaders Get A Job? What A Mess!

From Anthony Mallard

Whilst watching with incredulity the shenanigans of members of Parliament in supporting the unsupportable, the time given to the election of a party leader, whilst the country is in crisis, the various ‘U’ turns, indeed, some more of a twirl than a ‘U’ turn.

Money wasted, rather than being spent on the needs of UK tax payers, in health, social services and other important and relevant areas, I pondered on the rhetorical question. “If those currently in power were to apply for a job in a multi-billion private company, would their CVs, qualities and qualifications lead them to be employed as the CEO, finance director or in any very senior role within those companies?”

If the answer is as I have guessed probably ‘no’ why are they apparently okay to lead UK Plc.

What a mess!

A very good question! The answer is that only a small minority on the “Conservative” side would qualify and probably none of the MPs in the other parties would even get an interview.

I agree that, after 12 years of Tory rule, we seem to be down to the dregs of talent in the party.

But government isn’t business. Business leaders have been a consistent flop in public policy roles. Think of ex-CBI director Lord Digby Jones, who exited ingloriously in 2008 after only 16 months as a trade minister, saying that it was “one of the most dehumanising and depersonalising experiences” anyone could have. Or Sir Philip Green, brought in by David Cameron (showing his customary judgement) to shake up the civil service in 2010. He had zero impact.

Is it me or did I see, as I write, our current Prime Minister doing a twirl at her press conference this afternoon!
