Two staff members from Farnham Road Hospital have received top honours at the annual Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Staff Awards, recognising their creative and compassionate work in mental health care.

Deepika Vijayaraj said receiving the award was “an absolute honour”.
Deepika Vijayaraj, an Assistant Psychologist on Victoria Ward, was named Employee of the Year for Hospitals and Specialist Services after launching a reminiscence group for older adults experiencing mental health crises. The group allows patients to safely socialise, share memories, and engage in calming activities. Described by nominators as “relaxing and uplifting,” the initiative has been so successful that it is now set to roll out across other wards.
“Receiving the award is an absolute honour,” Deepika said. “It’s truly delightful for my work to be acknowledged and celebrated.”

Richard Asker receiving his award
Richard Asker, a Healthcare Assistant on Magnolia Ward, was awarded Healthcare Support Worker of the Year for bringing his musical talent to the ward. A skilled pianist, Richard regularly plays for patients during his own time and has even founded a staff choir to perform uplifting songs for patients and staff alike.
“I am overwhelmed to win this award,” he said. “I have always wanted the best for the people we support and am grateful for the great team I work with.”
The awards ceremony took place at Reigate Manor Hotel on 14 May and was attended by more than 160 people, including Councillor Rich Michalowski, Mayor Elect of Reigate and Banstead. It marked the 17th annual celebration of the trust’s staff, highlighting individuals whose dedication and care are shaping a more compassionate approach to mental health.
Surrey and Borders Partnership provides mental health and learning disability services across Surrey, North East Hampshire, and substance misuse services in Surrey and Brighton. A full list of award winners is available on the Trust’s website.
