Letter: Cycling on the High Street Should be Properly Regulated

From Brian Holt

There are a lot of selfish, irresponsible cyclists in Guildford; just come to any Farmers’ Market in Guildford High Street and see for yourselves. Last Tuesday the High Street was very busy with mothers and small children, tourists and visitors.

For safety, the High Street is closed to all traffic and cyclists during market times but there are still cyclists who regularly put others, especially the little children, at risk of getting hurt.

One male cyclist rode down the High Street at speed, weaving in and out. He was told “No cycling!”, but in a rant shouted back foul four letter words in front of small children, tourists, and visitors. What must they think of Guildford?

As the High Street is one-way, road traffic can only drive up it, surely all these cyclists are committing an offence of riding down a one-way road the wrong way?

Even on normal days when the road is closed they still cycle down it, I have reported this to two PCSOs at the end of the market.
