Letter: Hysteria Over the Referendum Result is Absurd

BrexitFrom Ben Paton

Everyone wishes to blame someone. It’s all Cameron’s fault for calling a referendum. It’s all Johnson’s fault for siding for out. It’s all those ignorant uneducated people who did not know what they were doing when they voted out. All tripe.

The cause is simple and longstanding: the EU itself. Cameron went to the EU for improved terms and they sent him home with a worthless piece of paper. Jean Claude Junker signed the warrant that ended Cameron’s premiership.

The EU’s intransigent, Procrustean, arrogance ‘we know best’ is even more absurd than papal infallibility.

The fact is that the rest of the EU does not face the UK’s immigration problems. Half the world is not queuing up to live in Leipzig and Dresden (whose populations are still as low or lower than in the 1930s).

A liberal society, the English Language and a buoyant economic draws economic migrants to our shores. Why shouldn’t we be able to exercise some control?

Hysteria over a long overdue and necessary re-negotiation of our relationship is absurd.
