From Gordon Bridger
hon alderman and former Mayor of Guildford
In response to: Guildford Society Chair Quits To Challenge Council As Independent
I hope Julian’s example, who many years before he became the very impressive chairman of the Guildford Society was actively campaigning on local issues, eg trying to save the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra, will be followed by others.
While Guildford Borough Council has many efficient departments, for instance, finance, housing, and environmental services, its planning, since John Nightingale and John Davey left, has lacked direction and has landed us with a plan which ignored the town centre and was insisting that retail development should be increased by 42%.
While in the past local voting has been little better than a national Gallup poll, there cannot be many voters wishing to support any of our national parties.
It’s time for change.
Oh, I nearly forgot it is a council dominated by a Conservative group who have deselected three competent councillors. I wonder why?

Four if you include Simon Gimson, who lost his SCC seat due to a mistake made by his agent and was then pushed out to make way for Matt Furniss.

I am not really surprised to see this surge towards Independent candidates after the broken election pledge made by the local Conservative group on the preservation of the green belt.
