Letter: I Love Life in Solitary But…

In response to: Life in Solitary 4 – Trimming The Locks Down At Home

I love Tony Edward’s column, but take issue with his “Time to Fly?”. It’s bad enough for the airline industry at present, with thousands of us about to lose our jobs, and his comments only add to the fears of those with little knowledge of how an aircraft’s air-conditioning system actually works.

All modern aircraft are fitted with HEPA [high-efficiency particulate air] filters, the kind used in operating theatres, that are changed on a very strict maintenance schedule.

Also this from the International Air Transport Association: “We know that, as things currently stand, the risk of transmission on commercial aircraft is low as judged by IATA. This is based on evidence from contact tracing.”

I still doubt sensible people will take a 1 in 300 chance of sitting six hours with a person that has the virus on the plane remembering it is not only airborne but sticks to physical things for up to eight hours.

We are in a world of the totally unknown, and I am sorry for all those losing their jobs but in a country where paper shuffling [finance, insurance, computing, banking, planning, managing checking things computer gaming] is the prime product were these “real” jobs, in reality, designed to simply keep people occupied during the day as mechanisation takes over?

I do enjoy reading most of the letters and comments BUT it is becoming so difficult to read this pale grey lettering.
It was not always like this – was it?

Editor’s note: We are sorry to hear you are having difficulty but we have not changed any settings or fonts.
