Letter: Is the Aim of the ‘Independent Alliance’ More Committee Seats?

The new “Independent Alliance” Cllrs Cross, Rooth & McShee

From James Walsh

Labour borough councillor for Stoke

In response to: When Will We See the Independent Group’s Manifesto?

I’ve had an amiable relationship with Cllr Rooth since I was elected to the council in 2016, but I was surprised to see that he has gone from being an Independent councillor to the leader of a group of “Independents”.

Cllr Rooth has been consistent in his disdain for party groupings in local authorities – at least since he stopped being leader of the Conservative group in Guildford – so I can only wonder at the raison d’etre for the new grouping at Millmead. Committee seats, perhaps?

Nobody watching Cllr Walsh’s personal abuse of Cllr Rooth during the Council debate on 4th December is likely to believe their relationship was ever “amiable”.
