Letter: Many Drivers Don’t Realise Castle Hill Is Two-way

From Carol Brown

In response to: Couple’s Fears Over Vehicles Damaging Historic Castle Arch And Offer Rising Bollard As A Solution

Before my recent retirement from Guildford Museum, I would drive through Castle Arch and up the road to where I parked my car in Castle Cliffe. Sometimes I would have to wait for ages before I could move due to the large volume of traffic coming down. Castle Hill  is used as a rat run to avoid the speed bumps in other roads.

Readers might be amazed at how many people think it is one way and speed down, and I got fed up with the abuse from drivers thinking they were in the right. I have had my car forced off the road by ignorant drivers causing me to hit the wooden posts at the top, damaging my car.

I asked Surrey County Council if a sign could be put up to let drivers know it was two-way and was told, it was not possible as there were very clear signs painted on the road.

Try telling that to those ignorant drivers speeding down!

    I support Carol Brown’s comments.

Another indicator of the lack of interest in and care of this part of Guildford, as well as making this narrow street a nightmare to drive along.

In my opinion, the signs are not sufficiently clear to indicate this is a two-way traffic street.

I wonder for how much longer the arch will survive? Perhaps the “powers that be” would be pleased if it is seriously damaged by motorists and then deemed to be unsafe and demolished.

I wonder if this why some people think it is one-way?

As you can see Google maps shows one-way arrows.

I wonder if sat-navs also do this?
