Letter: My Lockdown Continues As a Daily Nightmare of Noise From Building Works

I live on Castle Hill and my lockdown has been a nightmare of noise. Throughout the months, three houses have been undergoing extremely noisy building works, especially in the early morning.

This is distressing because I have been forced to remain at home during the lockdown. Since that ended, renovation has finished in one house but more extensive building has started on the other two in this small road.

The atmosphere is intense, as is the noise of digging machines, industrial chipping machines on tree limbs (thankfully finished), grinding that seems to never end, drilling vibrating and chainsaws howling, plus early morning deliveries by heavy lorries.

Night allows little relief, with drink-filled people leaving pubs and shouting and screaming till the early hours.

I appeal to the council to check the noise levels in Castle Street, especially in the mornings.

This six months of disruption, combined with the worries of Covid-19 and the stress of lockdown, has had a distressing impact on my mental health.

Why has the government allowed builders to work normal hours and at weekends during a pandemic lockdown? With so many people trapped in their homes, builders should be working shorter hours and not on weekends. Those working from home need a break from the constant repetitive noise.

I too experienced this when I was young and bought my first apartment. Nobody cared. Don’t expect the “authorities” to do anything.
