Letter: Old-fashioned Party Tribalism Is No Longer Appropriate

From Adam Aaronson

In response to: Reactions to Julian Lyon’s Statement of Intent to Stand as an Independent

It is becoming increasingly clear that old-fashioned party tribalism is no longer appropriate in our fast-moving world. There is no reason why effective government, both at the local and national level, cannot be achieved by electing more Independent candidates. We need more politicians who can take decisions according to their consciences rather than following a party line.

However, we also need a quantum leap in the way politicians think and behave, at all levels and a lot of politicians need to grow up and stop behaving like spoiled children.

To some extent, this is our own fault because for too long we have tolerated a system where we have allowed politicians to frame every policy within a blame culture. The excuse for something not working is always someone else’s fault. We need the politicians of the future to move on from this ingrowing toenail approach and to develop fresh policies that work for the future, rather than constantly blaming their predecessors.

A non-dualistic approach at last. Please politicians, look at a problem without apportioning blame, only then can there be some acceptance and meaningful exploration of a solution.

I agree. Too often politicians want to win, rather than use democratic debate to reach combined solutions/answers to problems which are greater than the sum of their individual parts.
