Letter: Pedestrianising the Lower High Street Is a Brilliant Idea

The lower High Street

From: Gavin Morgan

In response to: Time to Pedestrianise More of the High Street and Stop the Second Gyratory

If the bottom of the High Street was pedestrianised during the day then there would be no vehicle access to Quarry Street. So that would become pedestrianised too. And if Quarry Street was pedestrianised then Castle Street would be pedestrianised all the way to Tunsgate.

Imagine that – the entire historic heart open to pedestrians with more outside dining and street entertainers and more options for events.

There would have to be provision for disabled access and residents but what a brilliant idea. Perhaps the roads could be pedestrian priority with “access only” restrictions, as in Exhibition Road in London and elsewhere.

This is a great idea and it’s a real shame they’re not doing this for Car Free Day tomorrow. Behind Tunsgate to the Castle would look fantastic. Exhibition Road is a excellent blueprint.

Car Free Day has certainly shown us how possible, popular and profitable closing more roads to traffic will be. Mr Morgan’s letter makes complete sense to me as does Anna Deadman’s suggestion.

Massive thanks to the team who put together today’s Car Free Day, it was undoubtedly a huge amount of effort but so worth it to the thousands of locals, clearly having so much fun relaxing and enjoying themselves discovering, eating, shopping, playing and, of course, singing in the buzzing Guildford town centre.
