Letter: I Support The Dragon

From Dr Peter Shaw

I just wanted to send a letter of support to The Guildford Dragon after seeing yet another attack on the online newspaper by Cllr Spooner.

I think the editor and the team are doing a great job and great service to the local population of Guildford and I encourage them to keep up the good work.

Totally agree – I like The Dragon’s unbiased approach.

My thought is what is Cllr Spooner afraid of?

    Hear, hear.

It’s a good job that we do have The Guildford Dragon to objectively report the news and to allow us to comment on the various machinations of Guildford Borough and Surrey County Councils.

Sadly, the other online alternative – GetSurrey, has gone down the route of click-bait articles, trying to make the mundane appear sensational and it is seldom worth reading nor viewing the dreadful videos.

It’s a shame that Cllr Spooner doesn’t seem able to take the opportunity to engage with the The Dragon and its readers (the electorate) in a less combative fashion.

I’ve always found the Dragon to be fair and impartial. This is not something I have found to be shared by the councill Executive.

If they have to stoop to attacking the press, just because thay can’t stand to hear the truth, well, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

The Dragon is the best way for local people to access informed and intelligent reporting and challenging comment.

The Dragon does a great job of being impartial and fair in very tricky circumstances. There is a lot of personal feeling reported in many of the stories here and the variety of opinions available is great to balance the arguments.

Anywhere that is happy to post my grumpy opinions on things can’t have bias in its editing!

I would also like to add my voice to those praising The Dragon. It is truly local in reporting of news and seems to me to be wholly impartial. It seems to me that The Guildford Dragon is our only local newspaper now.

Up until last Friday, I also used to buy the Surrey Advertiser, but have made the decision to stop buying it from now on. It is a shadow of its former self, rarely contains anything of interest and the “Guildford” edition is full of stories from everywhere in the county but Guildford. I’m sorry to say that it seems to be dead on it’s feet.
