Letter: The Council Leader Should Have Explained Her Role

GBC’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee Meeting March 19, 2024

In response to: When Will Our Councillors “Walk the Walk” On Openness?

The gaping hole in the Overview & Scrutiny debate was the council leader, Julia McShane [Lib Dem, Westborough], who could (and should) have clarified what she knew and had authorised.

I personally felt sorry for the GBC staff who appeared to have been “hung out to dry” by the Lib Dem leader.

It seems to me that the council leader made the decision then handed responsibility to unelected officials to take the heat. Everything could have been clarified had the leader attended and explained her part in proceedings.

Editor’s comment: Perhaps not visible on the webcast, Cllr McShane was present but made no comment at the meeting. She is not a member of the O&S Committee. Lead councillor for Regeneration, Tom Hunt was present and did engage in the debate.

What with this fiasco, and the alleged serious fraud under her watch, it is beyond time that Cllr McShane retired from public life. Her leadership has been non-existent, and her unwillingness to engage with the public or press is unforgivable.
