In response to: ‘Too Little, Too Late’ Says Guildford MP on PM’s Performance After Publication of ‘Partygate’ Report
The “Partygate” saga has brought a number of trusted organisations and individuals into disrepute. No one trusts the prime minister to tell the truth about anything and that lack of trust has tarnished, if not irreparably damaged, the reputation of Members of Parliament, especially those on the Conservative benches who vacillated.
The reputation of the Metropolitan Police too, formerly a trustworthy organisation independent of party politics, has been damaged.
Its initial refusal to investigate party-gate allegations, its sluggish inquiry and its alleged failure to examine apparently obvious breaches of the regulations, have left many with the impression that it was unwisely influenced by politicians.
Ms Gray’s report, albeit hard-hitting, has a cloud over it, in that it would appear that meetings were held between the author and the Prime Minister, doubtless said to clarify factual elements, but seemingly with a possibility that changes beneficial to senior members of the cabinet and government may have been made.
There is no doubt that the prime minister, if he has any honour, must resign.
Will he? I doubt it.
And then we now await a further investigation by Durham Police into the Labour Party beer-gate incident. What a mess!
