Letter: Tories Should Take Ownership of Their Whole Track Record

From: George Potter

Lib Dem borough councillor for Burpham

In response to: Wey Towpath Diversion as Work Starts on New Walnut Bridge

It’s very bold of Sallie Barker and the Conservative Association to seek to claim credit for the work done on the bridge project under the previous administration, given that it was that very administration which allowed severe project mismanagement to occur, costing the taxpayer millions of pounds in increased costs for finishing the bridge.

They spent money on a design competition and then chose one of two design proposals without doing anything to make sure the design was physically possible to construct in the location.

So they then ended up having to pay for the development of a third design, from scratch, having already spent considerable time and money on one that was impossible to deliver.

If only Ms Barker’s Tory council colleagues would show the same eagerness to take responsibility for all of their record.

And now can we please have a bridge (even a temporary one ) reopened over the Tumbling Bay weir. It is now 14 months since its collapse, enough time for all the agencies, National Trust, GBC, and the Environment Agency to have thought things through.

Covid has seen an increase in walkers, runners, cyclists all of whom could benefit from the bridge being re-instated.

We had a temporary bridge over the Millmead lock and that lasted for a few years, the same could be done for Tumbling Bay and that would also give the EA time in which to plan its fish ladder/weir combination.
