Letter: Voters Have Long and Accurate Recall

Published on: 18 Mar, 2021

From: Colin Cross

R4GV borough councillor for Lovelace

Having sat on the committee in David Reeves’ disciplinary hearing (when a Lib Dem councillor) I fully endorse his view that it was a politically motivated accusation and another example of the leadership of the two main parties at GBC, at that time, working hand in glove.

There are plenty of others to be found, the passing of the appalling Local Plan during purdah by a combination of Tory, Lib Dem and Labour councillors being the worst example.

But I too want to look forward not backward and to that end, I fully expect that in the forthcoming SCC election the voters of Guildford will properly have in mind the ongoing Tory shenanigans that have blighted our borough recently.

Voters often have longer and more accurate recall of events than politicians it would seem.

Conservatives were awful and have left the legacy of destroyed villages. But the Lib Dems have not done much better. GGG was a great idea, but never got enough support. R4GV has not made much of a positive impact.

So who will we vote for?

As Valerie Thompson says, GGG was a great idea, indeed it still is. The party has consistently maintained the moral high ground, it has punched above its weight, it continues to achieve results and to voice residents concerns. We work and co-operate with other councillors of all political persuasions where we are able to bring them on board with our concerns or policies.

GGG has never been more relevant.

I wonder if Cllr Cross is standing for R4GV in the SCC election?

Paul Spooner is the Conservative borough councillor for South Ash & Tongham

Councillor “not on all fours with the Code” Spooner’s ridiculous complaint about David Reeve would never have surfaced without the disgraceful support from Councillor “I don’t have the brain space” Reeves.

Let’s hope that the new leader of the Lib Dems has more brain capacity than to pledge their support to Mr Spooner the next time he decides to get his hatchet out.

In the meantime, as a result of the disastrous Local Plan, the rape of the Horsleys continues at pace.

The Tories spent more time bullying GGG for drawing attention to their inadequacies than actually fulfilling their election promises to protect the green belt.

For those who have any interest in preserving what’s left of Guildford’s green belt, then in my view, the best party that is fighting to preserve it is GGG.
