In response to: R4GV Leader Endorses Conservative Candidate Without Considering Consequences

On the subject of considering consequences…

I don’t think anyone now seriously questions that Brexit has been a disaster economically, politically and (especially) to the UK’s international influence and reputation. The Tory party are the latest victims of this colossal misjudgement, which is unrivalled in the last 85 years. Suez (another Tory escapade) perhaps came closest.

Re-joining the EU is politically out of the question for the foreseeable future. The frictional costs of joining the first time, and then leaving after 40 years, were damaging enough.

But from a much weakened national position, it’s essential we now re-build closer cooperation with Europe in every area, just as the Swiss and other third countries do.

Let us by all means rejoin a “common market” as it used to be without the political baggage of the “four freedoms”.

Does anybody wish to have political ties with the likes of Hungary’s or Slovakia’s pro Putin governments?

We can disagree on the pros and cons of Brexit but of course it makes sense for us co-operate with the EU or any other country on things that are in our national interest. The problem with being a member of the EU was that we were forced to co-operate on things that weren’t.
